Interlock Devices

Under certain types of DUI convictions, you will be required to have an Ignition Interlock Device installed in your vehicle if you are to continue to drive.  These devices are a requirement if you are getting a Hardship License, or if you have been convicted of a second DUI offense.  These devices make it impossible to drive your car if you have consumed any alcohol.  Recent laws (Melanie's Law) have increased the difficulty in continuing to drive after a DUI conviction without jumping through a multitude of legal hoops.  It is strongly advised that you contact a Boston DUI Defense Attorney if you need to drive and have had your license suspended or revoked due to a DUI conviction.   The recent laws make it more difficult to get a Hardship License, and you must prove that it is not possible to take public transportation.  It is advised that you contact a DUI Defense Attorney if you are trying to deal with this confusing and complex problem.

Ignition Interlock Devices in Massachusetts

When you are charged with a DUI, you may consider you are a "first time offender".  However, if you have a DUI conviction in your past, no matter how many years in the past, you will be considered to be a "repeat offender".  Even those who were convicted of DUI years prior to the passing of Melanie's Law will be dealing with this new application of DUI laws in Massachusetts.  It has been made more difficult to get a Hardship License, but with the assistance of a skilled and aggressive Boston DUI Defense Attorney, you increase the likelihood of being able to once again be behind the wheel of your vehicle.

If you are approved to get your license reinstated, or to be eligible for a Hardship License, you will be required to pay for the installation of the device, which costs about $200.  You will also need to pay a monitoring fee of about $85 every month that you are driving with the ignition interlock device.  This device, which is about the size of a mobile phone, will have to be installed in every vehicle you drive.   You will be required to "blow" into the device before the car will start.  If you register at .02% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or above, the vehicle will not start.  It will also require you to blow into it on occasion when you have been driving the vehicle.  There is specific maintenance you will be required to do on the device, and if you don't, you will lose your ability to drive.  You need help if you are seeking a license after it has been suspended or revoked.  A Boston DUI Defense Attorney can clear up the mystery, and help you to understand what will happen after any DUI conviction, and how to move forward.
